Equinix Australia has installed and commissioned the largest fiber count cable deployed outside of North America.
Aligning with their value and goal of interconnection, this high fiber count cable will provide primary and diverse customer connectivity for Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) customers. More 6912f installations are scheduled to follow, commencing in early 2020.
A complete cable, connectivity and splicing solution was designed by our parent company, AFL, and a number of innovative technologies including Fujikura’s patented SpiderWeb Ribbon® (SWR®) technology were utilized for the project:
- Low-diameter, lightweight 6912f Wrapping Tube Cable
- Splice-on MPO 12f ribbon connectors – delivering significant reductions in rack real estate requirements
- Ribbon splicing – up to 1440 fibers spliced per day
- 12f MPO testing – up to 500 bi-directional fiber tests per day
The project also included internal fiber connectivity, with low-diameter 144f cable manufactured by AFL US and terminated in-country by AFL.
Richard Kaehne, AFL AU/NZ Enterprise Market Manager, added, “The project has been a significant technology shift in the data center communications space. The introduction of ribbon fiber technology has delivered real estate savings, installation, and commissioning timeframes unachievable with single fiber deployments. The overall outcome in key project deliverables has been an outstanding success”.
